If you’re a triathlete and you’re reading this review, chances are you’re one of the thousands of us who regularly visit a professional massage therapist, or have the nasty habit of begging for shoulder, foot, neck and back rubs from your significant other. We love our sport of triathlon, but the truth is, long hours in the aero bars and grueling brick workouts can leave one pretty sore, stiff and uncomfortable. And when you’re feeling that way, it can be pretty hard to get up for the next day’s workout.
Lifelong athlete, and veteran triathlete Rich Poley has come to the rescue with his book Self-Massage for Athletes. It’s a simple concept, really. If you’ve ever actually rubbed your own feet, then you already get it. But his book helps you take it a step further, making self-massage something that’s personal and enjoyable, an important part of your own recovery process, so you’re less apt to nag your loved ones every time your muscles are sore.
Rich has divided the book into 3 sections. The first tells you why athletes need massages. Most readers will want to skip ahead to the second part, which instructs you on how to massage various parts of your body, with easy step-by-step instructions and close-ups on the models’ hands to show how to move them over your muscles. You might recognize none other than Michael Lovato posing in this section too! The third section sheds light on some tools that can be used for those hard-to-reach areas, like the back and shoulders, and also describes some breathing and meditation techniques to incorporate with your massages.
Self-Massage for Athletes would make a great holiday present for any athlete in your life – if not yourself! It’s an entertaining, easy read, and the instructional section is meant to be read as you learn the techniques to use for each body part. It takes the guesswork out of the best method to rub away sore, stiff muscles.
