Upcoming Aquathlon Highlights San Francisco’s Iconic Landmarks

(San Francisco, CA) - Swimmers, runners, and multi-sport athletes from around the world will join together on July 22, 2012 for the 3rd Annual Orca Alcatraz Challenge Aquathlon & Swim, produced by Tri-California Events.

This will be the second and final race in the Orca Alcatraz Challenge series, the first of which took place on Memorial Day with a 1.5-mile swim in the bay.

Athletes can chose from three race options for the July 22nd event:
1. Aquathlon: 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz to Crissy Field, followed by a 7-mile out and back run over the Golden Gate Bridge.
2. Aquathlon Relay Team: 2-Person Team completing full Aquathlon course.
3. Swim Only: 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz to Crissy Field.

"We always have a good showing of international and out-of-state athletes at the Aquathlon," said Terry Davis, CEO of Tri-California Events. "It's a great excuse for a vacation in one of the most unique cities in the world." Athletes from seven countries and multiple states have already registered.

Race morning begins by jumping off the California Hornblower, positioned right off-shore of Alcatraz Island. Once in the water, athletes will endure chilly water temperatures and moderate currents as they make the 1.5-mile journey to East Beach of Crissy Field. After removing wetsuits and transitioning to running shoes, athletes will enjoy a hilly but beautiful out and back run on the Golden Gate Bridge, ultimately finishing back at Crissy Field.

Athletes will jump promptly at 8AM. Coffee, bagels, fresh fruit and hot coffee will await them at the Finish Line Café. All participants will receive a custom Orca Alcatraz Challenge T-shirt and finisher medal.

Online Registration is available through Friday, July 20th. On-site registration will be available at Packet Pick-Up on Saturday, July 21st from 12PM to 7PM at the Sports Basement Presidio location, as well as on race morning at Crissy Field.
